Under averageconditions, better than 90 per cent ofthe customers orders for service andpractically all of the station mainte-nance work are completed with sup-plies secured from the regular stocksin these lockers. Large jobs, such asprivate branch exchanges, teletype-writers, etc., and requirements for un-usual items, are handled on individualorders and the supplies delivered di-rect from the distributing house to thecustomers premises in the daytime orto the locker locations at night by thesupply organization. SUPPLY LOCKERS IN CONGESTED DISTRICTS In downtown business districts, where traffic congestion makes trucks inefficient, lockerssuch as these are installed in convenient rented quarters where Plant employees on foot hare access to them locker plan has been introduced in thebusiness sections of smaller communi-ties and in apartment house sectionsin the larger cities. -Tor a number of years it was ac-cepted practice for the telephone com-panies to maintain storerooms in alltowns where Plant forces were sta-tioned. In areas far from WesternElectric distributing houses, wherethe distances precluded direct distri-bution, the aggregate of these manystorerooms represented sizable stocks,floor space, and handling costs. Thesupply service rendered by thesestorerooms was not in keeping with other service improvements becauseof the impracticability of carrying ineach one the wide variety of suppliesnormally required.
