UTAH COPPER MINE is located at Bingham Canyon, Utah, about 30 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The Mine is theater-like. quarry covering about 446 acres. Ore is mined by 23 electric shovels with dippers of 7 tons capacity. Maximum daily tonnage (ore and capping), 142,185 tons, maximum employees 2,000, mine tracks 67 miles, forty-one 75-ton electric locomotives. Height of mountain above pit 1,600 feet. At no place in the world is power shoveling and moving of rock done on as extensive a scale. Maximum daily tonnage would make a train 21.5 miles long. Total tonnage to be moved at Utah Copper Mine is more than twice the quantity of all material excavated from Panama Canal to its opening in 1915.
