Young, similar, but without black. KILLDEER.Length, 10-50 inches. Upper parts brownish gray, upper tail-coverts rusty;under parts white; two bands on breast, crown and lores black, foreheadand nape white. COLOR AND FOOD. 39 Much remains to be learned on this subject of themolt, and, although confinement is known to affect itsmanner and extent, I believe intelligent observation ofcaged birds veill lead to really valuable results. Color and Food.—In some instances it is known thata birds color is affected by the nature of its food. It isa common practice among bird fanciers to alter the colorof Canaries from yellow to orange-red by feeding themon red pepper.
