One nest, discoveredMay 3, held eleven eggs and two days laterit was found that another had been added. A flourishing colony of breeding Ospreysoccupy Orton Pond. A survey of aboutfour-fifths of the pond yielded forty-twonests, all but six of which were unquestion-ably occupied. At this date eggs werejust being deposited and in only a fewcases did the actions of the birds indicatethat incubation had begun. The nests areoccupied for a great number of years andbecome huge affairs four feel >>r more inthickness. They appear to be built en-tirely of dead pine limbs from which theneedles have fallen, but to which the barkstill adheres. An interesting feature about these FishHawk nests is that, without exception, theyhave all been built over the water. A cur-ious feature about the behavior of thesebirds is observable in the fact that al-though the waters of the pond abound infish, they seem never to attempt to catchany of them, but appear to seek their preyin the salt waters of the ocean, twelve orfifteen miles distant. Orton Pond is on Orton Plantation, abaronial estate owned and magnificentlypreserved by James Sprunt of the nearbycity of Wilmington.
