d in Lapland, where it is a useful animal to the Lap-lander. With two of these yoked in a sledge, the Laps havebeen known to travel more than a hundred miles a day. In one of the blufls I approached quite close to a goshawkwhich was perched on a decayed tree: it was evidently nap-ping, and the sticks cracking under my feet startled the bird. The American goshawk breeds in Manitoba and Assiniboia. Before me are three clutches that were collected in these pro-vinces. A set of two eggs were collected at Crescent Lake,Assiniboia, May 24th, 1890. They are bluish white, unspottedand sliefhtly nest-stained. These eoos measure 2.40x1.68 and2.83x1.65. The nest from which these eggs were taken wasmade of sticks, with bark and leaves, and built in a flr tree.Another clutch of four eggs was taken at Lake Francis, Mani-toba, May^ 16th, 1891. These eggs are also l)luisli white with-out spots, and incubation had commenced. These eggs measure2.16x1.78, 2.12xL68, 2.09x1.65 and 2.05x1.70. A third clutcl!

In North-West Canada. 179 before me are from the foot of the Riding mountains, nearMinnedosa, taken Maj^ 19th, 1891. Tlie nest was composed ofsticks and leaves, and built in a tir tree forty feet up, and thethree eggs are plain bluish-white unspotted. This is a noble hawk, and one of the handsomest of thefamily when in perfect plumage, and is a decidedly borealbird. It breeds in northein New England, New BrunswickNova Scotia, the province of Quebec and North-West toAlaska, where Mr. Dall records it as abundant, and residentin the Yukon region. The American goshawk has occurred inGreat Britain, and is now considered specifically distinct fromthe goshawk of Europe. The American rough-legged hawk also breeds sparinglythroughout the North-West, and I have a set of two eggs thatwere taken at Crescent Lake, Assiniboia, May 3rd, 1890. Thenest was in a tree, and made of sticks and leaves. The e^£!;&are much larger than Swainsons hawk, which is the mostcommon buzzard in tile North-West. T
