Title
Bird brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy bird brooch, measuring 28mm in length and 13mm in width. The triangular or fan-shaped tail projects from the roughly rectangular body; the tail is separated from the body by a rounded lobe, and traces of linear decoration can be seen on the tail and body. Projecting from the centre of the back there is a cross with rounded ends and a very short upper arm. Beyond this there is a vertical projection, parallel with the vertical arms of the cross, which is the bird's neck; the head is missing due to an old break. Beneath the undecorated breast, directly in line with the neck, there is an incomplete stub which would have been the beginning of the bird's legs and feet. The front is slightly convex. On the reverse, the transverse pin lug and longitudinal pin catch are complete. The pin constriction is set at the end of the tail and the catch is in the centre of the body. The reverse is slightly concave.

This bird brooch is eleventh century in date and is of a type confined at present to Denmark and England (Pedersen 1999). For parallels, see SUSS-44F203, SF-BCC403, BERK-5DED86, NMS-E7F720 and KENT-9F6987; rather different, unconventional examples are BERK-CEBC67 and SF-AD5FA7.
