the warmerparts of the year, as far north at least as British Columbia. They breedfrom Massachusetts and Minnesota northward, and on the higher mountainranges south to North Carolina. They winter in Central and South America. A Flycatcher that breeds in holes in trees, that is alike conspicuous for his size, fine colors, and efforts at vocalism, is surely a bird to attract attention. Such a one is the Great-crested Flycatcher. He is nine Crested Flycatcher, inches long. The top of the head, back of the neck, and Myiarchus crinitus (Linn.). o i the back are sfieenish olive brown. The winors and tail aredarker. Some of the larger feathers of the wing are edged with cinnamonand the inner webs of all but the two middle tail feathers are the same color, but rather lighter. The throat, region in front of the eye, breast, and sides ofthe neck are bright slate gray. The rest of the lower parts are clear sulphuryellow. The sexes are alike and immature birds are similar, but generally moreolive.

GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER. In the Woods. 171 The nest is placed in some deserted woodpeckers hole or natural cavityin a dead limb. Here some twigs, grasses, and often pieces of cast off snakeskin and a few feathers form a bed for the eggs or young. From three to sixeggs are laid. They are buiYy white in color, heavily lined and penciled allover with dark shades of brown. They are nine tenths of an inch long, andnearly seven tenths of an inch in width. These birds are found in the EasternUnited States as far north as Southern Canada and New Brunswick. Theybreed from Florida northward throughout their range, and winter from SouthFlorida southward to Central America. The Whip-poor-will seems like a moth among birds. The quality of thefeathers, their softness in color and markings, the very uncertainty of the flight when one is started from its bed of dry leavesWhip-poor-will. j,^ some dusky part of a deep wood, all join to heig^hten Antrostomus vociferus (Wiis.). - JT r J fci the impressi
