oncerts during theday—only individual songs. Aftersunset there seems to be an effort torenew the chorus, but it cannot becompared to the morning concertwhen they are practically undisturbedby man. Birds sing because they are happy.Bradford Torrey has given with muchfelicity his opinion on the subject, asfollows: I recall a Cardinal Grosbeak, whomI heard several years ago, on the bankof the Potomac river. An old soldierhad taken me to visit the Great Falls, and as we were clambering over therocks this Grosbeak began to sing;and soon, without any hint from me,and without knowing who the invisiblemusician was, my companion remarkedupon the uncommon beauty of thesong. The Cardinal is always a greatsinger, having a voice which, asEuropean writers say, is almost equalto the Nightingales ; but in this casethe more stirring, martial quality ofthe strain had given place to anexquisite mellowness, as if it were, what I have no doubt it was,A Song of IyOve. —C. C. Marble. (to be continued.)188

From col. F. M. Woodrufl. YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. THE YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, (bFP^p popular name of this speciesof an attractive family isYellow Throated Greenlet, and our young readers willfind much pleasure in watching itspretty movements and listening to itsreally delightful song whenever theyvisit the places where it loves to spendthe happy hours of summer. In somerespects it is the most remarkable ofall the species of the family found inthe United States. The Birds otIllinois, a book that may be profitablystudied by the young naturalist, statesthat it is decidedly the finest singer, has the loudest notes of admonitionand reproof, and is the handsomest inplumage, and hence the more attractiveto the student. A recognized observer says he hasfound it only in the woods, and mostlyin the luxuriant forests of the bottomlands. The writers experience accordswith that of Audubon and Wilson, the best authorities in their day, butthe habits of birds vary greatly withlocality, and in other parts
