There are about thirty species of Cor-morants which are distributed throughoutthe world. Ten of these are known toinhabit North America. They are oceanbirds, yet they are also occasionally seenon the larger bodies of fresh water. ThePacific coast of North America and theshores of New Zealand are rich in speciesand their plumage is more beautiful thanthat of those found in other parts of theworld. The name Cormorant is derived fromthe Latin words Corvus Marinus, mean-ing marine crow or raven. This namemay have been suggested by the fact thatthese birds are fond of sitting on an ele-vated perch, especially after a heartymeal. In this habit of seeking highperches, and because of their dark color,they resemble the raven or crow. Thegeneric name Phalacrocorax is derivedfrom the Greek words, meaning
