s of light, yet the pur-suer followed in the track of the pur-sued, turning when the bee turned. Therewas no cutting across, for there was notime for that. In short, the bird and thebee controlled the movement of theirbodies more quickly and more accuratelythan the writer could control the move-ment of his eyes. The chase was all overin half the time that it has taken to tellit, but the excitement of a pack of houndsafter a fox is as nothing in comparison. The bee escaped, the bird giving up thechase and alighting on a twig. It couldnthave been chasing the bee for food, andthere is no possible explanation of itsunprovoked attack except that it wishedto have all the honey itself. Both scenes afforded me a de-liglitful study and were a rare privilege.George Bancroft Griffith. 188

It growsin swamps, marshes and very moistplaces. It is a herbaceous perennialgrowing from spreading fleshy rhizomes. The long, sword-like, deep green, pointedleaves grow up from the rhizomes. The history of this plant dates backto remote antiquity, yet there is consid-erable uncertainty as regards the identityof the various plants which have at vari-ous periods been supposed to be sweetflag. There is no doubt that some reed-like plant in many respects similar ifnot identical with calamus was used bythe ancient Egyptians in the preparationof incense as recorded in the papyri ofEbers. These Egyptian records date
