d dish andchirped a welcome to his guest, then, hopping backward, selected a station andsang a sweet song for him. The mouseseemed to like it. He left off his eatingand crept along outside the floor of thecage, which extended a couple of inchesfrom the bars. Nixie within and Mousiewithout promenaded together around thefour sides; and close together, too, Nixieall the time gayly gossiping and chatter-ing. We say they kept it up for halfan hour, but that is a pretty long time.At any rate it was several minutes. How the acquaintance might haveended I cannot say. The next day thecurtains were taken down and Mousie, sadly disappointed, had no ladder bywhich to climb. And later in the weekNixie went out of town for the summer. We wanted to take the mouse, too, butthe noise the packers and movers madeprobably frightened him to such an ex-tent that he dared not show himself. Wedo not know what his future was, but wetrust it was crowned with the successdue pluck and gentleness. Katharine Pope. 68

Of all the bird voices of the meadow, for its interesting originality and its effect inensemble, we can least spare that of the little Grasshopper Sparrow.—R. M. Silloway, inwSketches of Some Common Birds. This little bird of the meadow andhayfield is quite easily identified by themarked yellow color at the shoulders ofthe wings, the 3^ellowish color of thelesser wing coverts, the buff coloredbreast and the orange colored line beforethe eyes. Its home is on the ground, where its retiring habits lead it to seekthe protecting cover of tall grass andother herbage. As it is not often seenexcept when flushed or when it rises tothe rail of a fence or to the top of a tallspear of grass to utter its peculiar song,it is often considered rare. It is, how-ever, a common bird in many
