Crown withbrown and black streaks, black line be-hind the eye, tail black with white outerquills, wings edged with yellow; underparts yellow, black crescent on throat.While they are feeding they constantlygive their calling song, varying the into-nation and accent in a way which is veryexpressive—Spring o the year, Springo the year! It has a breezy sound, asfresh and wild as if the winds were blow-ing through a flute. Hence it is evident that the poet meant,if he did not mention, the Meadow Lark,when he announced as the result of hispastoral investigations: Not an inch of his body is free from delight.Can he keep himself still if he would? Sea Urchins and Sand Dollars wouldscarcely seem, at first sight, to be re-lated to the starfishes, yet they are inmany respects identical in structure. Inthe Sea Urchin, the five rays of the star-fish are rolled together to form a spheri-cal or flattened disk, which is coveredwith spines of greater or lesser length.These spines work in a ball-and-socketjoint and are capable of considerablemovement. The intestine in the SeaUrchins is unusually long and is twistedabout in the shell in a manner similar tothat of the human intestine.
