most welcome andsounds the sweetest in the spring whenthese beautiful birds come like whirlingleaves, half autumn yellow, half green ofspring, the colors blending as in theouter petals of grass-grown daffodils.The more common rendering of its songmay be expressed by the syllables wee-chee, chee, chee, chee-wee. Mr. Lan-gille says: The song of the Yellow,*Blue-eyed Yellow, Golden, or SummerWarbler—for it is known by all thesecommon names—may be represented bythe syllables, wee-chee-wee-chee-wec-chee; or sweet, sweet, sweet, sweetie,uttered in sprightly whistling tones. Dr.Dawson expresses additional types of itssong with the syllables tsee, tsee, tsit-a-wee, tsee and ivee-chee, chee, cheewee-i-u/ The voice of the YellowWarbler is not indicative of the approachof spring, but rather it shows that theseason of green grass and flowers hasactually come. MUMFORD, CHICAQO account of a pair of these Warblerswhich took up their abode in some pop-lar trees on the opposite side of the streetfrom his residence in Washington. Themale sang through the season duringcertain hours with great regularity. Onthe fourteenth of May, his morningrehearsal began at a quarter after fouroclock and continued, until near eightoclock. In the evening he began at halfafter seven oclock and continued untilshortly after dusk. The home of the Yellow Warbler is acompact and cup-shaped structure builtof very neatly woven plant-fibers, finestrips of bark, fine grasses and plant-down. It is copiously lined with plant-down, soft feathers and often somehorsehair. This beautiful example ofbird architecture is not hidden in thedense foliage of the forest but is built inthe shrubs and trees of the roadsides andlawns, in orchards and in willows thatborder streams.
