soner and kill him. Livytells a pretty story of how, when MarcusValerius was challenged to combat bya gigantic Gaul, a crow came to hisassistance, attacking the Gaul with beakand talons until Valerius slew him.Afterward Valerius was surnamedCorons, in memory of his gallant andcourageous assistant. The Vikings, aware of the keennessof the crows scent and vision, used itas a pilot in their wanderings. Pro-phetic powers were also supposed to be-long to the crow. Bravo! cried Howard, you did notsucceed in finding much poetry in thecrow, but what an array of science, his-tory and prophecy! I shall take off myhat to Sir Crow the next time I meethim. Thank you so much, said Alice, for your helpful talk in the beginningof our bird study efiforts. We hopesome one of us, at least, may have some-thing of Thoreaus success, of whom itis said: All her shows did Nature yieldTo please and win this pilgrim wise.He found the tawny thrushes brood,And the sky hawk did wait for him. THE BRACKET FUNGI. The plants known as Bracket or ShelfFungi are familiar objects to every loverof nature who frequents our groves andforests. Beginning as small, slightlyelevated protuberances, or flat orbicularpatches on the bark of a dead tree trunk, log or stump, they gradually increase insize and assume more or less definiteshapes. Some never attain a breadth ofmore than a third of an inch, whileothers may ultimately obtain a width ofnearly a foot and one-half, and projectfully one-half that distance from the sur-face of the matrix. The most commonform, perhaps, is that of a semi-circle,the fungus being more or less flattenedand attached by its straight edge to thelog or stump. The species upon the under surface ofwhich pictures are often etched (Fomeslucophaeus) is a familiar example. Thisspecies occurs on logs and stumps of allkinds, throughout a large portion of theUnited States. Other kinds, beginningas separate brackets, become united bytheir edges so as to form continuousstr
