pel out of the rock salt. Id like to live down there, exclaimedJohn; I could have such fun makingsnow men out of salt and they wouldntmelt, either, just as I had them nicelyfinished. I think youd find salt a little hardermaterial to work with than snow, andwould throw up the task pretty soon, observed Howard, skeptically. Have we any such artificial caves ofsalt in America? Alice inquired. It is said that there are only two> per-fectly pure salt mines in the world andone of these is on an island in the state ofLouisiana. It has not yet been deter-mined how deep the deposit is, but sev-eral acres have been formed into vastchambers, which resemble beautifulcathedrals with floors and walls of solidsalt sparkling with crystals. The roof issupported by salt pillars sixty feetsquare. At this point Aunt Jane said Im sorryto interrupt, but it is the childrens bed-time, and they must say good-night. Iknow they will have magnificent dreamsof caverns measureless to man. Belle Paxson Drury. 116

As mean as a Coyote is a frequentexpression of sentiment which may beheard in the vicinity of the Coyotesrealm. It is a common saying of thefrontiersman, and to him it means muchfor he despises this animal not alone be-cause of its wholesale destruction ofgame birds, game mammals and domesticfowls and quadrupeds, but more, per-haps, because of its cowardly characterand its propensity for howling. The ex-pression As mean as a barking dogmight be used, for that is the meaning ofthe Spanish word Coyote. A barkingdog never bites unless it has all the ad-vantage on its side. Such is the natureof the Coyote. It carries its tail low—humbly—as befits a cowardly animal/It is bold only when in search of foodand when it has a safe avenue of retreatbehind it. The Coyote combines many of thecharacteristics of the wolf and of thefox. It has the body, tail and limb
