THE SEA GULL, Cautiously lifting itself from a crag And spreading its wings to the breeze. In spirals and curves the Sea Gull swe rvesOn its journey over seas. Skimming the crest of the highest waves,Then sailing high in the blue, Sure of its bearings, sure of its course,As sure as a compass, true. Rising in spirals that wider grow. To soar on its way oerhead. In narrowing circles it falls again In quest of a scrap of bread. Turning its wise head from side to side,Scanning the broad waters waste, Alert to danger, saving its strength. It journeys, yet not in haste. Calmly it travels, on and yet on.Unwearied, unworn with flight. Poised but a moment to rest on a wave,Then on again,, day and night. Thus on its watery course it goes, This snowy bird of the sea,Voyaging ever from shore to shore, A life that is wild and free. 56 -Rose Glass.

IS HLUK MOUNTAIN LOKV(Fsittaciis swainsonii). , I.ifc-Sizo. COPYRIGHT 1«00, BY A. W. MUMFORO, CHICAGO THE BLUE MOUNTAIN LORY, (Psittacus swainsonii.) There are a number of species of thebeautiful parrots commonly called thelories or loriquets. All of them in-habit the Australian region, includingPolynesia, and they are noted for theirbrilliant colors. The name Lory is froma Malayan word signifying parrot, andis now used, with slight variation, inmany languages to indicate these par-rots. One of their characteristics is apeculiarity of the tongue which is pro-vided with a brush instead of a fringeat the top. This brush seems to besimply an excessive development ofthe papillae which are always found onthe lingual surface. The loriquets or lorikeets are smallerbirds than the lories and include thespecies of our illustration. The BlueMountain Lory, or Swainsons Loriquetas it is sometimes called, is an inhabitantof the eastern portion of Australia andranges from Cape York to Victoria. Iti
