saw me? In his sadand mournful strain the Wood Peweeanswers, Wee-o. The quick, nervous calls of theCrested Flycatcher, the excited cack-ling of the Coopers Hawk, the screamsof the Red-tail, the squawks of theNight Heron and the resonant chal-lenge of the querulous Jay, have theirparts in the woodland chorus. Thesimple, earnest whistle of the BobWhite, the hurried warblings of theHouse Wren, the soft mourning of theDove, the happy care-free ditties of theIndigo Bunting and Yellow-throat, andthe sweet chatter of the Goldfinch areso soothing in effect that I am contentto sit and listen to the wonderful med-ley. The first days of May in the woodssurpass all others in the year, for it isNatures season of thanksgiving, whenbirds and bees and flowers and treesgive praise and honor and glory to theCreator. Evenings shadows are stealing uponme and I am loth to leave, for well doI know that a full cycle of months mustroll around before theglories of thisseason shall be repeated. Isaac E. Hess.

The Woodpecker family is of greatinterest not only for the variety ofbrilliant and striking colors which markmany of the species but also for itsunusual structual peculiarities, theheavy, chisel-like ^bill, the sharply-clawed feet with two toes pointing be-hind and two ahead, the stout tail-feathers used to help support the bodyagainst the tree trunk, and lastly itspeculiar sharp bristle-barbed tongue.This combination of odd characters hasproduced a very curious and interestinggroup of birds. Of the twenty-five species of wood-peckers which inhabit the United States,one of the most interesting is the Yel-low-bellied Woodpecker or Sapsucker.It is a conspicuous bird, easily knownby its bright red head and throat, andblack and white streaks on the sides ofthe head and the greenish-ye
