Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Birkhill fireclay mine The processing plant is at the top of the gorge and was fed by the small wagons (known as hutches) in the foreground which were drawn up the side of the gorge from the mine by an extensive rope drawn rail system. Part of the final section of the incline can be seen to the right. Fireclay was used to make heat resistant bricks for lining furnaces and locomotive fire boxes. Birkhill produced a particularly high quality of clay whichwas in demand around the world at the height of the industrial revolution.
