| Description |
English: Folio 58r from the Codex Mendoza. Early training of Aztec boys and girls, in four rows, each representing one year of their ages from three to six. In each row, from left to right, a father instructs his son, and a mother her daughter. The blue dots represent their ages, and the appropriate ration of tortillas for one meal is also depicted, from half a tortilla for three-year-olds to one and a half for six-year-olds. (1) Three-year-olds, already being instructed by their parents (as shown by the speech-glyph at each parent’s mouth) though not yet in specific tasks. (2) At age four, the boy is fetching water and the girl is being shown equipment for spinning. (3) Two five-year-old boys carry loads on their backs, and the girl is being taught to use the spindle. (4) The six-year-old boys are gleaning prickly pear cactus fruit and maize at the market-place, whilst the girl has started to spin thread. Shelfmark: MS. Arch. Selden. A. 1 |
