Mungo was coming ^vith his masters break-fast, as usual, when he heard the cry of the littledog. He set the dish down by the side of thepath, and dashed off down stream as hard as hecould run. 7. When he had got well below the little dog,he sprang into the river, and swam out into themiddle of the stream, just in time to catch thehelpless dog as he was sw^ept down. 8. Mungo seized him by the neck in such away as to keep his head above w^ater, swam withhim safely to the shore, and dragged him high anddry out of the water. 9. After shaking himself, he cuffed the littledog first with one paw and then mth the other,as much as to say, Now, you little dunce, keepaway from the river. 10. He then went back to where he had leftthe dish, and carried it to his master as usuaL LESSON XV. 43 EOW DOGS USE THEIB FEET.

Last summer little Harry fell intothe river when no one was near by, and Koverswam in and brought him out. 3. The folks made a great fuss over him then ;but he did not mind it, only he seemed glad thatHarry was not hurt. 4. I find my dog has just as many toes as a cat. LESSON XV.— (Continued.) His nails are longer than those of the cat, but notso sharp. They are big and strong, but he can notdraw them back into his foot. 5. He can not climb a tree, as his nails are notsharp enough, but he can dig a big hole in theground when he is after a rabbit or a squirrel. 6. The bottoms of his feet are harder thanthose of a cat, and he can run all day in roughplaces without hurting them. 7. With his hard feet and long nails he makesmore noise when walking than a cat; but then itis no matter, for he does not have to catch
