with his nose pointed one way for a long time, thechildren knew what was the matter. 2. There was a rat somewhere about, and Puffhad seen him go into his hole and was watchingfor him to come out. 3. The boys would get a spade and begin todig, and, when they had got in a little ways, Puffwould take the matter into his own hand, and dashinto the hole. 4. His little, short paws would make quickwork, and he would dig in until even the tip ofhis tail could not be seen. 5. Then a squeak would be heard, and Puffwould back out with a rat in his mouth, which heknew what to do with to prevent being bittenhimself. 6. He would fling the rat into the air, and, asit would come do^^ni, he would catch it by the napeof its neck, give it a shake or two, and it was dead. 7. How proud he was then! He would laythe rat down in different places to see where itwould look best, and then he would carry it roundto each one in the house, until somebody took himand scrubbed the dirt off, so he was fit to be seen.

Now we must find out somethins^ about thehorse, and, Charlie, I think you can tell us whatwe wish to know. 3. I can tell something how a horse looks andwhat he can do, for we have horses at home, andI help take care of them. 4. The horse is much larger than the cat ordog. His home is in the stable, and he does notcome into the house, as they do. 5. His head is long, and, when he puts his noseto the ground, the top of his head is just about ashigh as the top of a flour-barrel. 6. His eyes are large and round; his nose ismuch wider than that of a dog, but he has smallerears than some dogs, and they stand up straight. 7. Upon the top of his head, and along the topof his neck, he has a thick bunch of long hair, which is his mane. 8. He has a broad, strong back, and can carrya man all day without being very tired.
