Abovethe stairways of the Park Street entrance a bronze tablet, placed in com-memoration of the initial opening of the Subway in 1897, gives the fol-lowing data: This Subway authorized by the Legislatures of i8gj andi8g4. Hon. Nathan Matthews, Jr., Mayor of the City of Boston. Built bythe Boston Transit Commission. Howard Adayns Carson, chief engineer. Begun at the Public Gar-den, 28 March, i8g^, zuasopened to this point forpublic travel i September,i8()j. The work was com-pleted throughout andthe entire Subway openedSeptember 3, 1898. Itslength is about one andtwo-thirds miles. Itscourse is shown by theaccompanying map. The surface cars com-ing from the west enter atthe Public Garden andmake the loop at the ParkStreet station, whencethey return and emerge atthe Public Garden. Thosecoming from the southand north use that partof the Subway betweenScollay Square and theNorth Station.

Subway Route rr., r^ , . ■. , 1 he hubway is owned by the city and leased to the Boston Elevated Railway Company for a term of years, at an annual compensation of 4% per cent of the net cost of the work. The elevated trains use the Washington Street Tunnel, between whichand the Sul^way passengers transfer at the Ilaymarket Square station.The Tunnel, connected with the Elevated system, passes under Wash-ington Street, and, including inclines, is i/^ miles in length. It is con-structed on a generous plan and is attractively finished at the severalstations with tiling. The names of the stations are given in order ofdirection of traflic : south-bound — Friend, Milk, Winter, Boylston ;north-bound — Essex, Summer, State, Union. Each platform is three WASHINGTON STREET TUNNEL 37 hundred and fifty feet in length and will accommodate an eight-car train.This Tunnel was opened to the public November 30, 1908.
