Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bridge 28 on the Nottingham/Melton line This railway line, between Nottingham and Melton Mowbray, was one of the casualties of the Beeching cuts in late 1968. Its curves, cuttings and tunnels were considered ideal as a test route and it was adopted as Britain's only dedicated test track. It was used by the Research Division of British Rail to test the gas turbine-powered experimental Advanced Passenger Train but it was controversially decided to mothball it in 2005 following the successful testing of the Virgin Pendolino tilting trains.

Early in 2007 Metronet Rail committed to take control of the entire 21 kilometre length of track in order to test the next generation of air-conditioned underground Tube trains. To simulate actual operating conditions the track will be left in its used and worn state, although at least 4 kilometres will be electrified with Underground-compatible third and fourth rails.

The track was used in 1984 for the CEGB nuclear flask crash test in which a Class 44 locomotive was run into a nuclear container to prove its integrity to a sceptical public. See the series of photographs by Brian Robert Marshall starting with 543082.
