Description
English: Briggate lock and bridge. The view is easterly. The opening of the North Walsham & Dilham Canal - the only official canal in Norfolk - was in 1826. The North Walsham & Dilham Canal basically is the canalised River Ant, which was widened to accommodate Norfolk wherries that transported offal to bone mills and returning with loads of fertiliser. Corn and flour were transported to and from Bacton Wood > 649149 - 646568 and Swafield. Farm produce, timber and coal were also transported by wherry. The canal ran from Smallburgh to Antingham and contained 6 locks.
