Summary
[edit]DescriptionBritish Camp reservoir and Wynds Point - geograph.org.uk - 997034.jpg |
English: British Camp reservoir and Wynds Point Autumn view northwards from Broad Down - often used in the local calenders!
The house in the woods in the centre of the picture is Wynds Point, built around 1860 by William Johnson, a Malvern builder. After Johnson's death in 1883 the house was bought by the opera singer Jenny Lind as a summer retreat. She extended the house and gave it a 'mountain chalet' character. After Lind's death in 1887, Wynds Point was bought by George Cadbury and upon his death in 1922, the house passed to the Cadbury Trust. The garden is an example of a late Victorian wild garden, making good use of the quarry's exposed stone and a more formal character closer to the house. The garden is opened occasionally to the public under the National Gardens Scheme. |
