rger,sometimes even to the extent of five inches inlength. Situation and Locality.—On the ground amongstlong, coarse grass, tufts of rushes and heath ; some-times quite exposed on bare ground. On rough,undrained pasture land, moors, and uplands in theWest and North of England, AVales, Scotland, andIreland. Our illustration is from a photographtaken on the Westmoreland Hills, where these birdsare very common. AVe found a couple of nestsw^ithin a few yards of each other, the one containingtw^o, and the other three eggs; and the specimenfiguring on the page opposite w^as only just overthe wall in an adjoining pasture. Materials. —A few short bits of dead rushes,withered grass, or dead leaves, placed in some smalldeclivity ; sometimes nothing whatever. Eggs. — Four, sometimes only three, varyingfrom olive-green to brownish-buff in ground colour,spotted and blotched with dark green and blackish-brown. Size about ^-G-j by 185 in. Ti))ie.—April, iNIay, and beginning of Junesometimes.

Bill, short compared with thatof the Common Curlew, strong, nearly straight,greenish-yellow at the base, and black at the tip.Irides golden-yellow. A light-coloured streak runsfrom the base of the beak, under the eye, to theear-coverts, followed by a brown one running inthe same direction below it. Crown, nape, andback of neck light brown, streaked w4th black.Back, wings (except primaries, which are nearlyblack, with a wdiite patch on the end of the firstand second feathers), and upper tail-coverts lightbrown, each feather having an elongated blackish-brown centre.
