n, thicklycovered with light or dusky brown. The markingsare generally so thickly distributed as to hide theground-colour ; indeed, I have met with specimenswhere none of it could be seen. Occasionally eggsmay be found marked with hair-lines of duskyblack at the larger end. Size about 8 by 58 in.Distinguished by small size and brown appearance. Time.—x\pril, May, June, and occasionally aslate as July. Beniai-lis.—Migratory and resident, the latterbeing subject to local movement. Notes: song,short, soft, and musical; alarm notes, trit, trit;call, zeeaJi, zeeali, zeeali. Local and other names:Titlmg, Moor Tite, Titlark, Ling Bird, Teetick,Moss Cheeper, Wekeen, Pipit Lark, Heather Lintie,Moor Titling, Moor Tit, Meadow Lark. Sits closely,and hovers round, uttering its note, t)if, trit. PIPIT, ROCK. Description of Parent Birds.—Length about sixand three quarter inches. Bill medium, nearlystraight, slender, and dark brown, except at thebase, where it is dull orange. Irides dark brown.

MEADOW PIPIT. 202 BIIITISH lUBDS NEST^. A faint yellowisli-wliite streak rims over the ej^e andear-coverts. Crown, nape, back, rump, upper tail-coverts, and wings dull brown, slightly tinged withgreen, the feathers being streaked along the centrewith a darker shade. Edges and tips of wing-quills lighter. Tail dark brown ; outer feathers oneither side greyish, on the exterior webs and at thetips. Chin and throat greyish, or dull yellowish-white, the latter and sides of neck mottled andstreaked with brown. Breast dull greenish-white,streaked and spotted with brown. Sides olive-brown;belly, vent, and under tail-coverts dull yellowish-white, sparingly streaked with brown. Legs andtoes reddish-brown; claws black. The female is a trifle smaller, but similar inplumage. Situation and Localit//.—On ledges and increvices of rock; under an overhanging piece ofstone, or in the shelter of a tuft of grass growing onrocky sea coasts, pretty generally round our shores,with the exception of Essex, S
