The appearance of this bird, even as a visitor,is neither frequent nor regular. It has been foundbreeding with ns only twice, at the outside, duringthe last forty years, so that it does not call forspecial attention here. SCOTER, COMMON. Aho Black Scotee. Description of Parent Birds.—Length abouttwenty-one inches. Bill of medium length, swolleninto a knob at the base, and flattened at the tip.It is black, with the exception of a ridge of yellow,which commences half an inch from the tip andextends to the base. Irides dusky brown. Theplumage is deep black all over, somewdiat glossyabout the head and neck. Legs, toes, and websdusky, darkest on the last.
