ggs are deposited on the ground among stones,as well as on ledges of rocks above high water mark, andincubation lasts four weeks. The young are a pale fawn or buff tinged with grey, andthe points of their folded wings barely reach to the end ofthe tail, while in the adult they rather project beyond. They are not nearly of as common occurrence here asother species, only appearing during very severe weatherwhich has driven them south from their natural habitaton the shores of the Polar seas. The Greater Black-backed Gull. A very fine bird that breeds abundantly on the Scottishislands and in other places in the north of Scotland, butit is much less frequent in England. Except in regardto size it exactly resembles the Lesser Black-backed Gull,but it measures rather more than 2\ feet, with a wingexpanse of over 5 feet, and weighs about 5 pounds. Thefemale is somewhat less than the male. The young aremotded with greyish brown, and have light coloured legsand feet. FOR CAGES AND AVIAR/ES. 97

IHE GREATEIt BlaCK-BACKED GuL The Herring Gull. One of the commonest of the British representativesof its family. It breeds abundantly in the north of Eng-land, Ireland and Scotland, on cliffs, numbers of themcongregating together for the purpose of rearing theiryoung. The eggs are two or three in number, of a lightgreenish-brown spotted with darker brown of several shades.The length of this bird is about 2 feet, and its weight from y§ BRITISH BIRDS 30 ounces to 3 pounds. The upper parts are bluish-grey>except the primaries, which are black with white tips, andthe lower surface is white with a greyish tinge towards thevent. The legs and feet are grey, and the bill is palevellow.
