Sur lemplacement deces maisons, dont la dé-molition nest pas éloignéede nous, on a construit lesbâtiments qui se rattachentau nouveau palais desBeaux-Arts et des installations complémentaires pour la Bibliothèque royale. La statue de Charles de Lorraine fut dressée le 2 5 novembre 1848 sur sonpiédestal, sans aucune cérémonie dinauguration. Cest pourquoi il nous a été fortdifficile de trouver la date précise de ce fait, que les journaux mentionnèrentsèchement dans un obscur entrefilet. Aussi sest-on généralement trompé à ce sujet.

CHAPITRE IL Louis Hymans la fixe à lannée 1846. Dautres la reculent à lannée i835; dautres,incertains, se taisent. Lhistoire de cette statue est curieuse et fort agitée. Elle fut décrétée par un arrêté royal du 3o mai i835. Une souscription publique,dont linitiative appartient au père du regretté Eugène Van Bemmel et à la rédactionde lObservateur, ne fut guère fructueuse.
