Summary[edit]

Description
English: Buds of May by Waltham Lane This hawthorn hedge is about to burst into flower, quite early as it isn't yet May.

One of the old country names for the white flowers of this common hedgerow shrub is May blossom. The custom of using the flowering branches for decorating houses on the 1st of May is of very early origin, but since the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1752, the tree has rarely been in full bloom before the second week of May. Another common name is the Bread-and-Cheese tree which relates to the young leaves and buds, often picked and eaten straight from the tree by country folk. From my memory they taste nothing like bread and cheese!

See http://www.whitedragon.org.uk/articles/hawthorn.htm for the lore surrounding this ancient tree.
