Summary[edit]

Description

The Schengen area is under huge pressure because of immigrants fleeing to Europe. On the other hand, the horrible terror attacks in Brussels recently and in Paris in November 2015 put in doubt the Schengen area’s values, principles and even its existence. Freedom of movement seems to be fundamentally affected by these negative developments in the EU.

Euranet Plus and BNR, the Bulgarian Euranet Plus member, discussed about the future of Schengen in a bilingual debate moderated by BNR’s Brussels correspondent, Nikola Miladinov, in both Bulgarian and English.

Guests of the Bulgarian part of the debate: - Andrey Kovatchev, Group of the European People’s Party (EPP, centre-right), quaestor of the European Parliament, member of Parliament’s Bureau - Iskra Mihaylova, MEP, Bulgaria, Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), chair of the Committee on Regional Development - Angel Dzhambazki, MEP, Bulgaria, European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR), member of the Committee on Culture and Education, substitute of the Committee on Legal Affairs - Iliana Iotova, MEP, Bulgaria, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D, centre-left), vice-chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs - Dilyana Slavova, president of the REX section (External Relations Section) of the EESC (European Economic and Social Committee)
