Les gaz une fois comprimés passent à travers un condenseur composé de 1000 à 1500 mètres de tuyaux en fer étiré de 25mm^ plongés dans de l'eau froide. Ils cèdent à l'eau une partie de leur chaleur, égale par kilogramme de gaz à ce qu'on appelle la chaleur latente de ce corps, et par suite ils se liquéfient. Si l'on admet que la surface K-fL représente en calories la chaleur nécessaire pour élever un liquide de ToO à T^ absolus, il faudra, pour convertir ce liquide en vapeur, ajouter de la chaleur qui peut être représentée par les rectangles M-f X. Le liquide se vaporise immédiatement et absorbe pour 1 idlogramme de son poids une quantité de chaleur représentée par L-hM, d'autant plus considérable que la température du congélateur est plus basse.
