Text Appearing Before Image:
Fig. 26. Lucretia from a good plant. The .separate fruit is full size. SOIL AND LOCATION
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 27. Lucretia from a poor plant. Oue-half natural si come from planting- on comparatively light, sandyground. LOCATION The location will probably prove to be fully as im-portant as with any other fruit, when the culture of 138 BUSHFBUITS dewberries comes to be better understood. In partsof the West, the Windom has been found to givebetter results in shady locations, the finest berriesbeing found even in dense shade. Because of itshabit of growing on dry, sandy ground, location toavoid drought may not be so important as with theblackberry, but any location, like a cool northern ex-posure, which will tend to mitigate the hot, scorchingsun, will undoubtedly prove beneficial. FERTILIZERS Thus far the necessity for fertilizers has hardlybeen made apparent, and it is doubtful whether atthe time of planting they are ever advisable. Still, ifplants are as productive as they should be, a judiciousapplication of fertilizers, after they have borne two orthree crops of fruit, can hardly fail
