Summary

Description
English: Victorian cabbies shelter, Station Square, Beverley around 1890

This week’s image is of a group of cabbies standing in front of their ornate shelter, Station Square, at the Railway station, Beverley.
Nowadays, modern day taxi drivers can keep warm and dry behind the wheel between fares, but for their Victorian and Edwardian predecessors in horse – drawn cabs there was no such luxury. Although passengers were protected from the elements, cabbies sat in the open at the top of the carriage. Local authorities up and down the country set up the shelters, to curb the problem of the cabbies retreating to Public Houses to find warmth and refreshment.
