Highsmith Archive.; Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.; The monument recalls the Battle of Point Pleasant, the most significant event of "Lord Dunmore's War," fought at the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers between British troops and a coalition of Indian tribes in what was then far-western Virginia, on October 10, 1774. The brief "war" was subsequently named for John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, who was the royal governor of Britain's Virginia Colony. "Tu-Endie-Wei" is a Wyandotte word meaning "point between two waters." |
