English: GARMSIR DISTRICT, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - Lt. Col. Matthew Reid and Sgt. Maj. Brent Cook case 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment's battalion colors during a Transfer of Authority Ceremony, May 6. Cook, a native of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Reid, a native of Malone, N.Y., are the battalion sergeant major and battalion commander for 2/1. The ceremony symbolized the transition of authority for Marine security operations in Garmsir from 2/1 to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. The 2/1 "Professionals" have begun their travel home to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. The 1/3 "Lava Dogs" will support Regimental Combat Team 1, the Marine ground combat element in southern Helmand province. The mission of the RCT is to partner with Afghanistan to conduct counterinsurgency operations to secure the Afghan people, defeat insurgent forces, and enable Afghanistan to assume security responsibilities in the region. Ultimately, the partnered forces promote the expansion of stability, development and legitimate governance. |
