Summary
[edit]DescriptionCalycanthus occidentalis - Flickr - peganum (6).jpg |
My first flower on this shrub bought from Spinners last summer. I'm not sure yet why this species is not a lot more popular. The eastern species (C.floridus, but other names turn up which may or may not be synonyms) is reasonably common but in my experience has much less conspicuous flowers and is generally less impressive. This plant is bigger in all it's parts - the biggest leaves here are six inches long, and this flower is twice the size of my floridus and a much brighter red. To be fair I think floridus is quite variable and I might not have the best form. It may turn out that occidentalis is a bit shy flowering or something but so far it's certainly proved vigorous and easy so I'm optimistic. I'm going to try cuttings soon so you can all have a go (all of you in the UK anyway.) |
