| Description |
English: Rocca San Silvestro (engl. Saint Sylvester Castle) is a mediaeval hilltop castle (ital. rocca) in the metal-bearing hills (ital. Colline Metallifere) of Tuscany. It was inhabited for four centuries from the late 10th or early 11th century and is now partially demolished. The structure of hardly one hectare is situated on the top of a hill in the very north of the middle-Italian municipality of Campiglia Marittima. It once served miners and metal-smelters as an environment for living and labour.
The castle is one of the most important samples of a stately settlement with relationship to mining and metalworking in Europe. Additionally, it is the main visitors’ attraction of the Archaeological Mines Park of San Silvestro which opened in 1996. The lords’ quarter or citadel (see background) was inhabited by the castle lords as well as by soldiers, servants and other persons directly dependent on them. The terraced residential area (see front) was inhabited by miners, smelting workers and craftsmen including their families. |
