| Description |
English: Canal overflow near Emscote Road. The Grand Union Canal between Cape bottom lock SP2766 1074499 (photo of top lock) and Radford bottom lock/Foss Road locks SP3564 3468, a distance of some 7-8 km, is a sink or low stretch which receives water from locks when they empty.
The photo is of one of several overflows to watercourses which maintain the level of the canal. A concealed weir allows water to fill a long channel, which spills into a lower channel and thence by culvert down the embankment to a ditch and the River Avon. The length must be to allow the water to re-oxygenate while reducing the volume discharged at any one time. |
