Text Appearing Before Image:
lace in a publication regarding something of minor concern, there would be none eager to dispute, and the misstatement likelywould be passed with trifling consideration. But when book afterbook is written as the honest endeavor to set forth what is given tothe public as the true account, then it is evident that those whohave bestowed the greatest thought see the injury error causes, andso are anxious to correct the false impression that has gone forth. There has been so much discussion regarding the settlement ofVirginia, over its minor and even about some of its main featuresthat one must needs wonder whether there has not been amongthinking men as great interest taken in the methods of the Virginiasettlement as there has been in the Shakespeare-Bacon controversy. In fact, what discussion has arisen has been as acrimonious, somekeeping Captain John Smiths memory alive as a hero-navigator andfounder, while others have decrided him as a wretch and an inten-tional, international impostor.
Text Appearing After Image:
CAPTAIN JOHN SMITHThe accepted likeness of the redoubtable explorer Jamestown Settlement 39 So bitter has this fight been in the world of letters that thelooker-on, the student and the casual reader have wondered whetheror not all historians are wrong, and if only one has struck upon thetrue account, then which one of the many is he. It cannot in off-handfashion be said that the one who has followed literally the recordshas been right in this case, for it is agreed that there was a coloringgiven to suit two parties which were at serious odds, with the Kingof England and his powerful sway as the head of one of these factions. As has been said, there have been many of those who throughoutcenturies have held Smith up to view as the one great man in thisenterprise of 1607. Others have followed on his tracks, as left byrecords, and pronounce what he wrote but fulsome praise, untrue, hardly reliable in any part whatsoever, and pointing out that if muchis false none is to be depended upon.
