Summary
[edit]DescriptionCarman Hill-fort, wall of outer enclosure - geograph.org.uk - 1348609.jpg |
English: Carman Hill-fort: wall of outer enclosure This is the first in a series of ten linked items showing the structure of an ancient hill-fort on Carman Hill (for an in-depth discussion of its history, see 697526). The book "Archaeology Around Glasgow" (Susan Hothersall, 2007) contains an article about this fort; a 1960s plan of the fort, reproduced in that article, proved to be a useful guide when this series of photos was being taken.
Although it can be seen from this photograph that bracken was starting to spring up, a line of boulders is still clearly visible; those boulders lie along a rampart that forms the southern side of the outer wall of the hill-fort. The following annotated satellite image shows the line of the outer wall (the photo was taken from the position indicated by the yellow marker): http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=111659464483026017583.00046c006b8cbbc7f0cf2&ll=55.980112,-4.611275&spn=0.002635,0.006523&t=h&z=18 There is a single outer wall around most of the fort, but, as will be illustrated later in this series of items, there is a double wall on the eastern side. As for the background, the distant housing schemes are those above Bonhill; the dark wooded summit of Pappert Hill is placed centrally in the background, with the distant Campsie Fells beyond. Next: 1348616. |
