CHOICE SEED POTATOES. 45 CHOICE SEED POTATOES. We make a specialty of growing and introducing choice potatoes for seed, and have probably done as much in this line as any seed house in America. We make it a practice to test all new varieties as they come out, with a view to get the best, healthiest and most productive kinds for general cultivation. After many years' trial at this work, we have selected the follow- ing varieties, which we have found to be not only hardy, productive, free from disease, but to be of superior quality both for market and home use. PLEASE NOTICE.—As prices are subject to fluctuation, we would request that our customers send in their orders as soon as possible after receiving our catalogue. All orders will be promptly acknowledged and potatoes forwarded as soon as weather permits, in time for spring planting. Customers re- siding South can have them shipped at any time during the winter with little or no risk, but those residing North or West had better wait until the extreme freezing weather is over in March or early April, which will be in ample timefor planting. To freeze potatoes, when packed in tight barrels, requires ex- tremely cold weather. We ship each season several hundred barrels seed potatoes to nearly all sections, North, East and West, and rarely receive a complaint of freezing. We pack our potatoes in large round hoop barrels, of two and three-quarters to three bushels each, and make no chai-ge for bags, barrels or cartage. We will quote special prices on five and ten barrels of one variety. POTATOES BY MALL.—All potatoes, except where otherwise noted, will be sent by mail, postage prepaid, at 30c. per pound; 3 pounds for 75c, carefully labeled. WILSON'S STRAY BEAUTY. This needs no further praise. It has now been before the people for fifteen years, and is to-day acknowledged by all to be the earliest potato in the world. All who have ever tried it will say this. For an extra early potato for table use or market their equal has never" yet been found. For truckers and market gardeners there is more money in the Stray Beauty than in any other early potato. By freight or express, peck, 60c; bush., $2.00; barrel, $5.00. EXTRA EARLY SIX WEEKS. Evidently a seedling of Early Ohio, which it very closely resembles in every way. It is of large medium size, smooth, oblong to round in shape, skin light pink ; flesh white; eyes near surface; tubers close together in the hill, and begin to form when the vines are very small, and grow so rapidly that, under favorable circumstances, they are as large as hen's eggs, and are therefore fit for family use in six weeks from time of planting, and mature in between ten to eleven weeks. We find them good yielders, productive and good croppers for so early a sort. Per peck, 60c.; bush., §2.00; bbl., $4.50. CARMAN No. i. A New Medium on Intermediate Potato. Originated by the celebrated editor of the Rural New Yorker, who produced the " Rural New Yorker No. 2." It is a seedling from other seedlings raised through several generations, always retaining those with best qualities. It is medium in season, shaped like the Rural No. 2, and has very few shallow eyes. The flesh is unusually white and the quality perfect. It is considered bv many of the best potato growers in the country the most promising second early variety recentlv introduced. Peck, 50c; bush., $1.50; bbl., $3.75. CARMAN No. 3. Very Large, Remarkably Productive, High Quality.
Text Appearing After Image:
Like Carman No. 1 it is a seedling from seedlings, and it resembles that variety in having few and shallow eyes. It is one of the greatest yielders ever introduced. It may fairly be claimed that it does not yield any small tubers at all. The tubers are borne very close to the plant, making them easy to dig. It is of the largest size and shapeliest form; a perfect keeper, that is, it will not sprout up to planting time, unless kept in a warm place. Both flesh and skin are pure white, eyes few and shallow. Late in ripening. Our claims for Carman No. 3 are: it is the handsomest large potato ever produced; it will out-yield any potato of its class ; practically every potato is of marketable size; its table qualities are up to the highest standard. It has yielded over six hundred bushels to the acre, and in one instance twenty-two acres have produced seven thousand bushels. This, the introducer's description, fully conveys the many points of advantage of this new potato. By express or freight, peck, 40c; bush., $1.35; bbl., $3.50. .
