Summary[edit]
DescriptionCarnforth railway station in 1998.jpg |
Original description: Carnforth station in 1998 Carnforth station at that time was at a very low ebb, with the main-line platforms out of use, before its recent restoration, and no-one could have imagined that Noel Coward's memorable film, 'Brief Encounter' could have been made there. The train shown is a Class 142 'Pacer' unit, in Merseyside livery. Unbelievably, this train was the scheduled service for all stations to Carlisle via Barrow-in-Furness, a journey of some three hours, and to suspend credibility even further, the same unit was then rostered for the connecting service from Carlisle to Newcastle, where it did not finish, but then ran to Middlesbrough via Sunderland. Anyone making the through journey on this uncomfortable unit would probably have needed admission to intensive care, provided they were not found dead on arrival at Middlesbrough. |
