Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Castle Toll Remains of motte and bailey are in evidence as well as larger earthworks believed to have been made in pre-Roman times. Its position on raised ground between the Rother and Hexden Channel afforded a good look out point down the then tidal river. The site is believed to be the one Alfred the Great fortified in 892 when the Vikings invaded and occupied the Isle of Oxney. The fort may well have been used into medieval times when it was still possible for the French to sail up the river to Robertsbridge and burn it down. If you look very hard and very close you may spot a fox on the earthworks observing my activities.
