Le texte commence ainsi, au v° même du titre : « En Espaigne avoit unedamoiselle, laquelle print, hors du royaulme, a mary le filz du roy de Sar- BELLES-LETTRES. 435 daigne, et fut appellée ycelle damoiselle royne dEspaigne, et eut nomDoctive, et le roy eut nom Marchaditas...» Le roman de Cleomades a été composé dans le dernier quart du XIIIe sièclepar ADENET LE Roi, qui en emprunta le sujet aux légendes byzantines. Larédaction en prose est, daprès Du Verdier (III, 199), lœuvre de PhilippeCamus, dont nous avons déjà cité YOlivier de Castille (t. II, n° 1491) et quiest peut-être aussi lauteur de Pierre de Provence (t. II, n° 1491). Le poème original dAdenet le Roi a été publié par M. van Hasselt(Bruxelles, 1866, 2 vol. in-8). 2626 (1503 a).
