The landscape is in complete shadow, full ofluminous reflections, and a group of tall slender trees, crowned with sparsefoliage, forms a prominent mass in a silhouette against the sky, dominatinga clump of smaller trees growing above ledges on the left, and marking the crestof a gentle sloj^e which extends off to the right, with here and there scatteredtrees and bushes and, farther away, a forest, all in strong contrast against theevening sky. In the near foreground, in a rough i)asture witii scattered bushesand withered grass, is a small pond reflecting the modified glow of twiliglit fromthe zenith, and a cow, accompanied by a peasant, stands knee dccj) in the water inthe act of drinking. THE FARRIER CONSTANT TROYON Xo. 28CONSTANT TEOYON 1810—1865 THE FAinUER . Height, 14 inches; ividth, 10^/^ inches / A peasant smith, with a young assistant, is engaged in examining the forefoot of ashaggy white pony which stands in full sunlight near the entrance to a large roughstone barn. The peasant is dressed in a pale blue blouse, dark blue trousers andsabots, and stands with his back toward the spectator, raising the horses hoof uponhis knees, which are protected by a leather apron. Close at hand stands the youth,wearing a red cap and red trousers, helping to liold the horses leg. Above thegroup the facade of the barn, with stone and brickwork showing through thebroken plaster, rises out of the )Hcture and is crossed by a grapevine growingat the corner and extending from the eaves to the open door. On the left of thegrou(), beyond a deep shadow cast by the barn and a smaller building behind it, isa bit of hedge, and farther away is a sunlit landscape with the figure of a peasa
