A Whittier Sewing Class 60 CATALOGUE O F the will, taste and judgment, so that neatness, perseverance, pa-tience, promptness, thoroughness and economy of material becomesecond nature. Boys, as well as girls, sew in the lower classes. In the lower grades, coarse materials are used, such as card-board, burlap, raffia, worsted in the spool-knitting and weaving,and cord in the string work. The lessons are arranged progressively, beginning with the fol-lowing:—Correct position of the body, finger drills, use of needle,thimble and scissors. In the advanced grades are taught basting,running, overcasting, stitching on muslin, overhanding, hemming,gathering, felling, patching, stocking and cashmere darning, but-ton-hole making, and the sewing on of buttons, hooks and eyes, andtapes. The children make small pillow cases, sheets, aprons and dress-skirts, and draft and make small undergarments.
