The chancel is Decorated work; the nave, which hasnorth and south aisles and transepts, is in the Perpendicular style; the oak roofis of very elaborate design, beautifully carved and decorated. In the north tran-sept is a nmral tomb, with an effectively carved canopy; the recumbent effigy ZOYLANP, AND TaUNTON.) BEFORE THE BATTLE. 297 is that of a priest, and is probably not in its original position. The nave hasa clerestory, which gives colour to the local tradition that the church was builtby the monks of the monastery which formerly existed here, and of which re-mains are still to be seen. The church has suffered the ravages of restoration.

TAUNTON : THE INTESIOa, and a fine old oak pulpit and sounding-board have disappeared, but some richlydecorated bench-ends, with the initials R. B., still remain. In the village of Weston Zoyland lay the royal cavalry, and here were theheadquarters of the general in command, the Earl of Feversham. At Chedzoy,to the north, lay the regular infantry, and Monmouths heart grew heavy as hegazed upon them, for he could remember how some of the battalions there as-sembled had fought under his command at the battle of Bothwell Bridge. In thechurch of Weston Zoyland is an altar-cloth which was thrust away beneath thepulpit to escape destruction at the Reformation, and was only discovered a few 298 ABBEYS AND CHURCHES. (Bridgwater, Weston years since; in the chancel the credence table and sedilia still remain; there isalso a monumental brass which has not been stolen.
