For exceptionally meritorious and distin-guished services. He commanded the 81st Division, with dis-tinction, throughout its operations beginningOctober 1, 1918. The excellent conduct of thisdivision was due, in a large measure, to hisgreat military knowledge, energy and zeal.He has shown qualities of able leadership andhas rendered services of great value to theAmerican Expeditionary Forces. In command of the Forty-second Division from Chateau-Thierry to theconclusion of the Argonne-Meuse offensive,including the Baccarat sector, Rheims, Vesle,and at the St. Mihiel salient, this officer, withhis division, participated in all of those im-portant engagements. The reputation as afighting unit of the Forty-second Division isin no small measure due to the soldierly quali-ties and the military leadership of this officer.G. O. 12 (January 17, 1919). (265) /
